Linnaean classification:
Domain: Eukarya Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Aves Order: Cathartiformes Family: Cathartidae Genus: Vultur Species: Vultur gryphus Regulator: The Andean condor is a regulator because it is a warm-blooded organism and is able to maintain relatively constant internal conditions. For example, it flies in an environment where winds have varying temperatures and it is able to regulate its internal temperature when it is flying. Migration: The Andean condor can be considered a migrant animal as it regularly travels over relatively long distances. Although it does not need to move to a different habitat due to homeostasis, it sometimes flies for over 125 miles in search of food. Generalist: The Andean condor is a generalist because it can live in areas from green grasslands and alpine areas to deserts. This is because its niche is rather large, able to eat many things, being a scavenger. So, it can survive in many environments, as long as its food, dead animals, are evident. Consumer: The Andean condor is a consumer because it cannot make its own food, not being able to perform photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Detritivore: The Andean condor is a detritivore because it is are mainly a carrion eater, which means they scavenge for and eat animals that are already dead. Niche: The Andean condor is a scavenger, feeding mainly on carrion. If they can find it, they feed on large bodies such as llamas, alpacas, rheas , guanacos, deer and armadillos. They also feed on the carcasses of introduced game species such as wild boars, rabbits, foxes and red deer. However, they are able to kill and feed on small, live animals such as rodents, birds, and rabbits. They can survive in a large range of conditions, almost any biome except for arctic and tundra. This bird can only produce one baby every other year. |
