Linnaean Classification Domain: Eukarya Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Artiodactyla Family: Bovidae Genus: Gazella Species: Gazella leptoceros Regulator: This organism is a regulator because it is warm-blooded, being a mammal. This means that the organism can maintain a constant body temperature even as the environment’s temperature fluctuates, to a certain degree. Migration: The slender-horned gazelle does, in fact, migrate across the desert or chaparral, although it does not have a set migration pattern. They run in groups, looking for food. Specialist: Although these gazelle do move around often, they generally only live in the desert and chaparral. Consumer: This animal is a consumer because it consumes other living things to obtain energy. It cannot perform photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, so it has to eat other organisms for food. Herbivore: These gazelles have been know to eat grass, succulents, herbs and foliage of shrubs. Interestingly, they can obtain all of their needed water from their food. Niche: More than any other animals, humans are the most dangerous to these animals, as we reduced their population from being the most prominent in the area, to a mere 2500 in the world. However, cheetah and African hunting dogs have been known to kill these animals too. The gazelles eat grass, succulents, herbs and foliage of shrubs. These animals, living in the chaparral and desert, do not rely on open water sources, but they get their water from their food. They can stay cool by reflecting sun rays off their skin coats instead of absorbing them. They make one offspring at a time, with a gestation period of 156-169 days. |
